Choosing a water fountain pump for your garden pond -  buy only what you need

A fountain in your garden pond can serve several purposes: it's pleasant to look at, it produces a soothing sound, and it helps provide useful oxygen to your pond. The action of the fountain nozzle ejecting the water in fine droplets allows oxygen to be captured from the air. This life-giving oxygen is then transferred into your pond, where it can be used by fish and plant life.

If all you want is a simple water fountain, then choose a pump model that comes complete with the water fountain included.

When shopping for a fountain pump, be aware that different manufacturers use different names for the fountains produced ... names like tulip jets, foam jets, umbrella jets, etc. Make sure you choose the water fountain jet appearance you like when purchasing a fountain pump. Another consideration is how high you want the fountain to spray. To operate a high fountain, you'll need a more powerful pump. If you do choose a water fountain pump with high jets,  make sure that your pond is wide enough so that the water won't be blown away on a windy day.

One way to ensure that you get the effect you're looking for is to purchase a fountain pump that comes with a range of fountain heads included. That way if you get tired of the spray pattern after a few weeks, you can switch heads and have an entirely different effect without having to replace the entire pump. If you're trying to save money, on the other hand, the cheapest type of fountain nozzles are the single layer and 2 layer water fountain jets.

As a side note, if you discover that your fountain pump is a bit too strong, you can divert some water back into your pond by adjusting the valve that comes attached with most good fountain pumps.
